International Day of Yoga: 21 June
Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derived from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness. Recognizing its universal appeal, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga. The 4th IYD theme for the 2018 celebration, organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, is ‘Yoga for Peace.’
World Music Day 2018: 21 June
Music brings the world closer. Not just words, there are notes, songs, and tunes to express every emotion. To mark its significance, music lovers all across the globe get together to celebrate World Music Day on June 21 every year. The day is also known as Fete de la Musique after a music festival that began in France in 1982.
PM to lead 4th International Yoga Day Celebrations in Dehradun
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will lead the 4th International Yoga Day Celebrations in Dehradun on June 21, 2018. The Prime Minister will join thousands of volunteers, performing Yoga asanas in the lawns of Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, located in the lap of the Himalayas. A series of Yoga related events are being organized across the world to mark the occasion. The Prime Minister had earlier participated in Yoga celebrations at Rajpath in New Delhi in 2015, the Capitol Complex in Chandigarh in 2016, and the Ramabai Ambedkar Sabha Sthal in Lucknow in 2017.
SBI MD Sriram new IDBI chief
State Bank of India (SBI) MD B Sriram will be the new CEO of IDBI Bank for
three months following a special order by the government. The appointment was
through an official order and is the first such lateral shift of senior
management form SBI in decades. The top position at bad-loan ridden IDBI Bank
had fallen vacant after its CEO Mahesh Kumar Jain was named deputy governor of
Shillong (Meghalaya) gets selected as the 100th Smart City
Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya has been selected as 100th Smart City after evaluating the proposal submitted by it. Till now, 99 smart cities had been selected in four rounds of competition and with today’s announcement, selection of 100 cities has been completed under the Smart Cities Mission.
Economic Offences Wing arrests Bank of Maharashtra chief, 5 others for bad loans
The Economic Offences Wing of the Pune police on Wednesday arrested Bank of Maharashtra MD and CEO Ravindra Marathe, executive director Rajendra Gupta and two other bank officials, including Marathe’s predecessor, for allegedly disbursing crores of rupees in loans to DSK Developers Limited (DSKDL) without following proper procedure and in violation of RBI guidelines. These arrests are part of the ongoing probes into the Rs 2,043 crore economic fraud said to have been committed by Pune developer D S Kulkarni, alias DSK, and his group of companies here, police said.
Haryana notifies scheme for free treatment, compensation to acid attack victims
Haryana government has notified a scheme to provide ad-hoc relief or medical reimbursement and rehabilitation services to acid attack victims of up to 18 years of age. Under the scheme “Relief and Rehabilitation of Women and Children Acid Victims”, any victim (girls, women, and boys up to 18 years acid victims) having faced acid attack after May 2, 2011, would be eligible for ad-hoc relief or medical reimbursement and rehabilitation services. The monthly financial assistance of Rs 8,000 to acid attack victims who come in the definition of disability. Referring to the financial assistance to be given under the scheme, she said that a sum of Rs 1 lakh would be paid to the acid victim within 15 days of the occurrence of such incident (Rs 25,000 as ad-hoc relief immediately by the concerned deputy commissioner to the acid victim. The remaining amount of Rs 75,000 will be given within 15 days by the Women and Child Department.
South Central Railway becomes 1st zone to become 100 percent LED Lit
South Central Railway has become the first 100 percent LED (Light Emitting Diode) lit Zone on Indian Railways, achieving the milestone on 21 June, well before the target date of June 30 that was set by Railways Minister Piyush Goyal. Earlier, SCR had provided 1,35,417 LED luminaries to cover all its 733 railway stations and 1,424 service buildings by March, which also was a first amongst all Zones. The commissioning of LED lighting at all residential quarters on the Zone, has added to make the Zone 100 percent LED lit now.
South Central Railway introduces ‘Train Captain’ service in Venkatadri Express
Venkatadri Express which started from Kacheguda towards Chittoor on 20th June evening became the first train across South Central Railway (SCR) to have a ‘Train Captain’. The ‘Captain’ will be sporting a badge and his name and mobile number will be made available for the passengers so that he can be directly contacted for any train-related issue like a deficiency of service or any complaint during the course of the journey. The captaincy is being handed over to the senior-most among the traveling ticket examiner (TTE) in the train from the starting point.
Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian resigns
Union Minister Arun Jaitley had said that Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian will be leaving the finance ministry because of “pressing family commitments” and will return to the US. Subramanian was appointed as CEA to the finance ministry on October 16, 2014, for a period of three years. In 2017 his term was extended for a year.
Srikanth is the SI sportsperson of the year
Ace Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth has received the ‘Sportsperson of The Year 2018‘ title at an event organized by sports media brand, Sports Illustrated. The 25-year-old was honored for his stupendous performance in 2017, which included 4 superseries crowns apart from ending the last season as World No. 2. Legendary hockey player Dhanraj Pillay, who was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award, expressed his gratitude for the honor.
