India to host European Union Film Festival
Putting a spotlight on the latest European cinema, the European Union Film Festival (EUFF) will premiere in New Delhi on 18th June 2018 at the Siri Fort Auditorium. With a selection of 24 latest European films from 23 EU Member States, this years’ film festival brings some unusual stories for the world cinema enthusiasts. The European Union Film Festival is organized by Directorate of Film Festivals, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India partnering with the Delegation of the European Union and embassies of EU Member States in various city film clubs. The festival will traverse through 11 cities in India from 18th June till 31st August.
Karnataka Bank launches ‘Deposit Only Card’
Karnataka Bank Ltd has launched ‘KBL-Deposit Only Card’ that enables hassle-free cash deposit transactions at the bank’s 24×7 e-lobby services. The bank said that this card is specially meant for the bank’s current/overdraft customers. These customers can perform cash deposit transactions even with higher deposit limit at the bank’s bunch note acceptor (BNA) or cash recycler kiosks by using this card. The limit for the cash deposit a day is Rs 10 lakh.

India thrash Afghans by innings and 262 runs in Historic Test
After posting a mammoth first-innings total, India dismissed Afghanistan twice in two sessions to secure a huge win by an innings and 262 runs on the second day of the historical one-off Test match here at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on 15th June. In reply to India’s first-innings total of 474 runs, Afghanistan batsmen failed to counter world-class Indian bowling attack and fell like a pack of cards to eventually bundle out for 109 runs in the first innings. With the win, India becomes the first Asian team to win a Test match inside two days.
Greece, Macedonia reach accord to resolve dispute over Macedonian’s name
Greece and Macedonia had reached a historic accord to resolve a dispute over the former Yugoslav republic’s name that has troubled relations between the two neighbors for decades. It is currently known formally at the United Nations under the interim name “Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia“. Under the deal, Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev said his country would officially be called the “Republic of Northern Macedonia“.
PM visits Chhattisgarh, inaugurates Integrated Command and Control Centre at Naya Raipur; dedicates modernized, expanded Bhilai Steel Plant to the Nation
The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, visited Chhattisgarh on 14th June. He inaugurated the Integrated Command and Control Centre at Naya Raipur Smart City. He was briefed on various aspects of the Command and Control Centre. He later visited Blast Furnace-8 at the Bhilai Steel Plant and was briefed on various aspects of the Plant. People lined the streets of Bhilai to greet the Prime Minister.
Gujarat tops NITI Aayog’s composite water management index
The government has ranked Gujarat as the top state in composite water management in the country followed by Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. While Tripura has emerged as the top performer in north-east, Rajasthan has emerged as the best performer in the incremental progress over last two years.
WPI inflation rises to 14-month high in May on costlier fuel, veggies
Inflation based on wholesale prices shot up to a 14-month high of 4.43 percent in May on increasing prices of petrol and diesel as well as vegetables. The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation stood at 3.18 percent in April and 2.26 percent in May last year.
India’s first female ‘Haj coordinator’ to wear ‘hijab’ for the first time in her life
In a first, the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs has appointed a female Haj coordinator who will be responsible for assisting unaccompanied women as they undertake the ‘Haj‘. An officer with the Indian Defence Accounts Services, Moina Benazir will provide any required support to about 1,300 women during their journeys to Jeddah.
Sitharaman opens BEL liaison office in Vietnam
Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said recently that there is immense potential to be explored by Indian defence industry in Vietnam in areas of co-production of platforms, spares, repair and overhaul services. Inaugurating the Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) liaison office in Hanoi, Vietnam at the Business Interaction organized by FICCI, Sitharaman handed over a symbolic key to Mr. M.V Gowtama, CMD, BEL.
Indian-American woman to become CFO of General Motors
An Indian-American woman, Dhivya Suryadevara has been named the Chief Finance Officer (CFO) of the US’ largest automaker, General Motors (GM). Dhivya Suryadevara, currently the vice president of corporate finance, will succeed Chuck Stevens, the GM’s present CFO, on September 1, the company said in a statement.
Smriti Mandhana to become first Indian to play in England’s Kia Super League
India Women’s Cricket team opener Smriti Mandhana will become the first Indian player to appear in Kia Super League – the women’s cricket super league in England. Smriti was signed by Western Storm and will represent them in the upcoming edition of the tournament that features six teams. PM to chair the 4th meeting of NITI Aayog’s Governing Council on June 17
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the fourth meeting of NITI Aayog’s Governing Council on 17th June to discuss various issues, including measures taken to double farmers’ income and progress of flagship schemes. Besides, development agenda for ‘New India 2022’ is expected to be approved in the meeting. The council, apex body of Niti Aayog, includes all chief ministers, lieutenant governors of union territories, several union ministers, and senior government officials.
India’s exports hit the six-month high of $28.86 billion in May
India’s exports grew 20.18 percent to $28.86 billion in May — the highest in six months, even though the trade deficit widened to a four-month high of $14.62 billion. Imports too rose by 14.85 percent to $43.48 billion during the month, according to the data released by the commerce ministry.
20 States sign MoUs to implement Ayushman Bharat health scheme
Twenty states and Union Territories have signed initial agreements to implement the Prime Minister’s scheme to provide health insurance to 10 crore poor families in the country. Punjab and West Bengal, which earlier did not confirm whether they would implement the scheme, have expressed interest in participating in the Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Mission, said senior government officials aware of the development. The scheme aims to provide up to Rs 5 lakh health cover for 10 crore below-poverty-line families identified using Socio-Economic Caste Census data.
106th Science Congress to be hosted by Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Jalandhar
The Lovely Professional University (LPU) had announced it has been slated to host world’s biggest science event – the Indian Science Congress – next year, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate it. The 106th Science Congress will be held from January 3-7 on the private varsity’s campus with about 15,000 delegates, including 300 top scientists and Nobel Laureates, from across the world, attending the meet.
